Why does my dog drag me around?
There are many underlying reasons for straining at the end of the leash; the dog smells something interesting, sees something, wants to visit, has unbounded energy, etc. Your dog has learned that putting pressure on the leash (though choking them in the process) brings them to where they want to go faster than otherwise possible. Dogs are able to instantly weigh concequence against reward (reward being getting where they want to go faster, etc. and concequence being whatever you are currently doing to try to dissuade them from pulling). In our class, we will show you how to train your dog not to pull in a positive method. We do not believe in physical discipline of dogs, rather, we give them choices and make it easiest to take the right choice.
You and your dog will learn to work together in a fun environment. You will no longer send mixed signals but will be able to tell the dog exactly what you want. The dog will be happier because he/she is getting rewards for the correct behavior, rather than punishment for incorrect behavior. As you get better and better at this, more and more distraction can be added.
